Monthly Report : August 2016

It was a double bill on 10 August! Matt Taylor gave his debut talk entitled Three Years at York, and Mo Ille spoke about Art & Photography. Splendid, both!

Matt's thirty-minute presentation covered not only wildlife observed during his three years at York University, but also stunning architectural shots and some interesting car and train images, accompanied by an interesting and informative commentary on where his photographs were taken along with 'techie stuff'  explaining how he achieved his creative effects. Should he decide not to be a chemist after all, Matt could make a career in photography I think: he has already been published in a national magazine.

The second half of the evening explained how photography was originally dismissed as not being an art form but has progressed through inspiring painting to being art in its own right - a very interesting journey and one which is probably not widely known. In this push-button age we take for granted the ability to record images on cameras that fit inside a pocket, yet in the 19th century there was at least one photographer who took large and cumbersome equipment into a hot-air balloon to take aerial views! Mo also provided some examples of photographs as surrealist art which may well be inspirational for some future photo slots at Winteringham.

For anyone who is going to London in the near future, Mo suggested some photogoraphic exhibitions which may be of interest:

Dorothy Bohn: Sixties London
Jewish Museum
Closes 29 August 2016
Fox Talbot: Dawn of the Photograph
Science Museum
Closes 11 September 2016
William Eggleston: Portraits
National Portrait Gallery
Closes 23 October 2016

Many thanks to both of these speakers, both for their lectures and for their patient answering of numerous questions from the floor.

Thanks also to Matt for judging the photo slot - A Manipulated Image. These are the winning prints:

Next month's meeting is 14 September, with a return visit of Geoff Trinder. The photo slot theme is Still Life.
